The Eccentric Teapot Short and stout, of course, is the very least of it. Inspired by the advent of tea drinking four thousand years ago in China, the form of the teapot has arrived in endlessly imaginative variations – humble, elegant, quirky, abstract. In the last two decades the investigation of the teapot as a pure art form has reached an inventive peak, but a fascination with the ceremony of tea drinking and with the objects designed for that ceremony has long flourished in both Eastern and Wester cultures. This beautiful and delightful book introduces us to come of the most sublime, outrageous, and exotic teapots ever to grace a Mad Hatter’s tea party. The designed of these idiosyncratic vessels have fully explored the ceremonial significance, spiritual associations, and formal complexities of teapots and tea drinking, but they have given the results a distinctly eccentric spin. Both comfortingly familiar and utterly peculiar, this fanciful, provocative, and intriguing gallery of teapots includes portrait teapots of Oscar Wilde, Brooke Shields, and Queen Elizabeth; teapots impersonating animals, vegetables, and Three Mile Island cooling towers: the teapots so far removed from the concerns of function that they resemble nothing so much as drawings of teapots. The form of this simple object has fueled the creative genius of art, craft, and industry toward ends as diverse as pure aesthetics, perfect utility, lighthearted whimsy, and political satire. …

Gave it to my niece who collects tea pots (coffee guy myself). Both she and her mother loved it.
Another joy for a teapot collector, what else can I say. What a joy to explore the pages of excellent photos!
Beautiful book. I use it for teaching purposes. Fun fantastic teapots in it. Wish Garth Clark still had a gallery in New York.
I bought this as a "whole hand" birthday gift for a friend who is an avid teapot collector. She has told me no less than three times that she loves it!!! It gave her some ideas for new teapots to buy. And the history of tea and teapots was fascinating. She read the entire book the day after I gave it to her.
For over 4,000 years tea drinking as been a social custom starting in China where elegant ceremonies have slowly evolved. The forms of the teapot have been endlessly imaginative; from humble to elegant; quirky to abstract. The designs of teapots have long flourished in both Eastern & Western cultures. This book celebrates some of the more sublime, outrageous & exotic teapots. Both comfortingly familiar & utterly peculiar, this fanciful, provocative & intriguing gallery includes portrait pots of Brooke Shields & Queen Elizabeth; teapots impersonate animals, vegetables & fruit. Teapots so far removed from steeping tea that they resemble drawings of themselves. Some pots are quite ugly! Still a hilarious & fascinating look at what artists have done to the humble teapot. END
I purchased "The Eccentric Teapot : Four Hundred Years of Invention by Garth Clark for my wife who collects teapots. Her collection is limited to handmade signed-by-the-artist teapots and teapots of unique (you could call eccentric) designs. I gave her the book Christmas morning. Throughout the day she briefly skimmed the photographs and histories of truly unusual teapots. Then after dinner I gave her one more present that was "forgotten" in the morning unwrapping rush. She was DELIGHTED to see that I had given her an exact replica of the bellhop teapot pictured on the cover! What a great way to top an already impressive gift for the teapot collector! She now displays the book and teapot together. I bought the teapot from the CIRCA Catalog. (800) 755-0403. I haven't seen the teapot in the catalog recently, so I don't know if it's still available.
This is a fun picture book and an informative volume--as an art lover and a seller of YiXing teapots, I found all of the images inspirational. It's wonderful to see examples of people thinking "outside of the box!"
